Upgraded toliet insides

I replaced the flapper last year, had a slow leak, and fixed that problem. Then over time I could hear the fill valve when it was filling up the toilet. I figured it was a matter or time until it failed. So as I looked into replacing it I saw something new that I thought was interesting. It was a new fill valve system with a new smart flush design. It cost a little more but I figured what the hell. I took out the old guts of the toilet and I first added the new quick fill valve which fills the tank quicker then the older one. It also comes with a pipe that goes down the length of the tank and shoots water in from below and the traditional top. That design helps it clean the inside of the tank which help keep the toilet bowl cleaner. Then I added the new smart flush flapper. Instead of the normal handle flush this has a button you push and the button is split. You push one part for a half flush (liquids) and the other part is a full flush (solids). I thought that part will be nice for if I have people over the toilet can keep up. The half flush means it is ready for two flush right away and the quick fill valve fills up the toilet quicker. So you almost could just have one person after another after another after another and not have to wait for the toilet to fill up. I thought it was neat.

Taking Out Inside Wall (80% done)

I had some family over during Christmas and my small house there isn't a lot of room. I decided to change that. I have been thinking for a while but wasn't sure. Then after Christmas I decided to finally make the change. You did have the dinning room/kitchen area and then a wall and then the living room. It's not the best for guest. because you would have 2 groups or crammed in one area. That wasn't good enough for me. So I decided to take our half a wall between the dinning room and living room. I didn't want to take it completely out because I still wanted a slight difference, but still have people feel together.

I took out one side slowly slowly so I could see if their was any wires or anything behind the wall. I knew about the electrical plug midway but wasn't sure how it was ran.

As I was taking out the studs each by each double checkingt o make sure it wasn't a load bearing, which I looked up in the attic and double checked and didn't seem like it was, but still need to be safe. I was going to come down to the chair rail but I noticed that may be to low. I decided to go up a little higher so you dont see the back of the fireplace and if I ever wanted to put a couch or anything over there you wouldn't see the back of the couch. I would rather see a little higher wall then the back of a couch. It just doesn't look right if it is higher.

Now you can get the idea of the open space now. I still need to work on the little things to finish up but the big stuff is out of the way.

Garage Trellis

I wanted to do something with the back side of the garage. At first I wanted to make it so you could open it when I had people over. But the more I thought about it the more it didn't make sense. The smoke from the firepit would go right intot he garage and mostly you would lose that area for storage. I would have to buy hardware for the door to be used to open and I couldn't put anything in that area so when I opened it. So I then started to think what could I do to make it look better. I kept thinking and looking through magazines. Then it hit me. I thought I would build a trellis so plants could climb up and cover the garage door.

First I built a planter the length of the area.

Then I cut some 1x2s from the bottom of the planter to the top of the garage door area.

I screwed them into the planter and into the garage wall so it wasn't free standing and fall over.

Then I cut the 1x2s to lengths so they could connect the post. That wayy it keeps everything square and gives the plants something to grow different directions. I thought going level across was to plain. So I decided to go up at a angle to give it a better look.

I glued the center parts together and put clamps on them for a couple of days so their wouldn't be a gap between the boards.

Trash/AC Gate

This past fall I was helping my old boss and he was going to throw out a small white plastic fence. Instead of just throwing it away I decided to use it. I put it on the side of the house next to the side street so instead of seeing the trash cans, extra trash, and ac unit, you will see a fence. It is still white but I will try and paint it during the warmer month.

The I dug holes in the ground and put the post in it deep enough so the fence post were the same height as the fence. I filled the holes with some motar I had from building the fire place. I should have used concrete but I used what I had. This project has only cost me about $20.

Now what it looks like during the summer. It's better then just seeing a wall and the ac & trash cans.

I could even put the pallets behind the fence and you can't even see them.

The fence was actually about 2 feet taller with a halfway see through part. I cut that part off so the fence would come just below the kitchen window so if you looked out you didn't just see a fence. With the top of one of the fences I put in one of the planters in front of the trailers. I think it adds a little better look and the plant has something to grow onto too.

Horseshoe Pit (95% done)

I finally got around to starting to make the horseshoe pit. It is still a work in progress.

I had to put it in a spot that does get a little in the way of me getting to my trailers, but I think I have that figured out. I am going to try and make the one stake able to be pulled out. Maybe add a pvc pipe in the ground so I can slide the pin in and out when I need to drive over the area. I could have moved it closer to the gate to for function of the yard, but then it wouldn't be even to the carport and would look odd from the backyard. So I went with lining it up to the middle of the carport. I also could have moved it out away from the carport more, and still might, but I lined it up in the middle of the gate and big planter on the right side. If I move it out then it wouldn't be in the middle, and if you have ever played horseshoes they sometimes like to roll. I didn't want the rolling horseshoe to run into the big planter and crack a piece of wood or run over a plant.

I went over the ground with my tiller to get all the grass and weeds out of the area. Also to dig a little bit so I can add plenty of sand.

I added some trash bag liners to the dirt and then put the sand on top. That way it should help keep weeds from growing in it.

I still have to design the wooden box around it. I might get 1x4s and just lay them flat on the ground and make a box that is just 1inch tall and 4inches wide. That way you can see the box look, but not have to come off the ground much. Also having the wood on the ground should help when a truck drives over it that it would break. It easy to replace when needed.

I didn't like where the horseshoe pits were. I thought they seemed a little to close to the carport hangover. So I moved them out a little more. Then on one cold day that I had off work I went out and dug up all the dirt for the new area.

I used some 4x4s I had and made a wooden frame. I used 4x4s because I think they can hold up better to a vehicle driving over them then a 1x4 that might break pretty easily or move. The inside measurements is what the official horseshoe pit should be. I used 4 8inch lag screws to help keep the frame from moving. Mainly the pit closest to the street where I will have to drive across it to get to the trailers. That is another reason I put the frames in the ground and not above the ground.

I filled in the sides with dirt. I pout enough in at first to keep them from moving easily and I ran string all the way across from each pit to make sure they are square to each other.

From this pic you can see the left pit very well but the right side you can see how it is flush with the ground. They dont stand out as much. Ideally above ground would be better looking but I would lose function of getting to the trailers. You have to design with what you have.

I just need to hammer the post in the ground now.

Another thing I did which I have really been thinking about an the easiest is adding a flower bed next to the carport on the yard side.

Took down the small fence. I'm going to put t back up at the end before adding plants.

I got my weedeater out and trimmed the area out to get a idea of the area.

Then I tilled up all the area that is going to be a new flower bed. I seems to be great soil in that area. Also I made sure to go out enough so when rain comes off the carport it will go into the flower bed, which means less watering I have to do

I'm not 100% sure what I am going to plant but I am mainly thinking about tulips, then planting other plants there so each season a new plant will come up and keep having color all years. I also might add pumpkin seed their to grow my own pumpkins.

Updated finishing planter. I have added dirt, mulch, 3 rows of bulbs, 1 row should come up then the next and then the next to give a spring to fall color each and every year.

Took down the small rails and add 3 long planters. I will most likely just put annuls in but I think it looks better.

I added some broken solar lights that I put dirt in and I will put some small plants that will give a little extra color during the spring-fall time. It is basically done. Then during the summer I am going to try and grow pumpkins in the planter.

This is the summertime look. Making the planter a little wider so the water above drips into it really helped the flowers grow.

Bench Planter

One of my first projects was adding gravel to the breeze way so it would look better, I wouldn't have to cut the grass there, and to make my little home that much bigger. When you have a small area you make all of it work for you.

I got a old bench for free from Craigslist. I had to go to Brentwood and get it, but it was free. It is a little used and run down but it still holds people. So I kept the old wood on it so it had a rustic look.

Added some 4x4 post to give the bench a little height. I put the bench right where the living room window was. Adding the 4x4 gave it enough height that you can watch tv outside over the couch. That will be good during football season.

I moved all the gravel out of the way and dug down a couple of inches. I then added some dirt from the load of dirt I got a little while ago. Then I added 3 lily hostas since the bench wont allow a lot of sunlight. I then added some potting soil so they should do pretty good.

The side of the house just looked a little boring. I had thought about adding some bushes, but I wasn't sure. Then while I was at Lowes I saw they had some bushes on sale, real cheap. Only $1 each so I figured if they died, it was only $7 and I would get to see how that area looked with bushes.

Plain and simple before

I started this project at about 9pm, so my neighbors might not have liked I was tilling up the yard when it was dark. I used my trucks lights to give me light.

I added 7 of these plants. They get about 4ft x 4ft and I spaced them about 2.5ft away from each other. They should fill into each other as they grow and should look good once they hit their full size. They also turn green, to yellow in fall, and red during the winter so it should give it a 3 color show. They also weren't doing well, that's why they were $1.

As you can see they are already getting greener and doing better after I got them.

I added some cedar mulch, redish color mulch, to see how the red mulch would look, and it was on sale. All the other areas have black natural mulch.

4 Smaller Wooden Boxes

I still had numerous wood left from the out decking I got, thanks again Christian. I made 4 smaller wooden planters that I put some small bushes in, Azaleas to be in fact. They are small bushes that bloom in the spring time and have some nice red flowers. They were added to be in front of the trailers, again draw your eye to the plants and not the trailers. Think or urban camo, haha. These came out ok, not my best work. That's what happens when you need to finish a project and tired.

The past planters I made I put a trash bag liner in them to try and keep water and the wet soil from getting to the wood. Just something to help them last longer. This one I got a new idea. I had just put in a couple of bushes, post about it in a moment, and the plastic pots they came in were just about the right size.

So with my handy creative mind I decided to use them. I guess that is from watching Junk Raiders on ION tv. Since it was round and the planters were square, I did the impossible. I made the round peg go into the square spot, and that kids toy said you couldn't. With a hammer it can be done easily.

What I have done with Freecyling and Going Green with my house. Some of it is because it helps the environment and some is because I am cheap and you have to do what you have to do to get by.

Once was a deck in East Nashville. It was going to be thrown away but I was able to get the wood and reuse it for other things around the house.

Butterfly House

My newest work, but might be my worse. It didn't turn out how I wanted and I might do back and remake it with another type of wood or screws. This one was just being a pain for some reason. The wood wanted to split, and one did that I had to remake one piece, and it just wanted to be a pain even though it wasn't that big. I make the butterfly house to attract butterflies. I would have done things for birds and bees, but I have a nephew and other friends with kids and butterflies aren't scary. I have already started some small plants in the back (coneflowers) of the big planter to attract butterflies and I will have a couple of other plants in the work and I might buy (butterfly weed) to help bring them in.

A planter box may not sound great to a lot of people, but just think that these wood use to be a old deck. So think of freecyling (IONLife channel term) or going green.

As the plants grow they will start to hide the trailers some, not 100% but just look better. The plant I have in it right now I started as seeds indoors and they can grow up to 15 ft tall.

Also with all the planters might keep people from trying to steal them. Trailers are valuable, but I have a trailer lock on 2 of the 3 and a thick chain attaching 2 of them. As soon as the plants start to grow it will really take shape.

It's looking better, slowly.

Moved Square Wooden Planter

I made this square wooden box planter and I had it out in front of the trailers. I decided to make another big 40x14x20 planter and moved this planter to the patio. I still don't know what type of rose bushes I have, but they are small and put out a pink/red roses through out the the summer and fall. So I moved them from the smaller pots that I had them in, originally had them on the patio wall that I made long planters to take it's place. Once I add some flowers around the bottom of the planter I think it will look better.

The house was very plan and needed some more color/plants, so I decided to add some windows planters. I could have just bought some at Walmart or Lowes, but I couldn't find just the right length or the same color and type so that all the windows planters would be the same. So I decided to make some wood planters myself. I'm not the greatest wood worker, but I did ok. It took me a while to decide what design and color scheme to go with, but I finally got done with the window planters.

New Big Long Planter for Carport

The last project I did, which took to long and wore me out, was adding a big flower planter to the end of the carport. I am going to try and get some small trees and plant in the planter and they can grow up tall enough to cover the carport from the street. hat way i gives you a little bit of privacy.

The planter is about 8 feet long x 2 feet wide (inside area) x 2 feet tall

This past weekend I went and cut down some bamboo from a another East Nashville house. Very nice guy and very nice house. The BamBoo was harder then I thought to cut down. BamBoo roots move around and just about all stocks are tied together. Almost like a spider web type because 1 stock may have 1 or 4 different roots going off of it and tied with other stocks. I spent 2 hours getting enough for what I needed. Now done, well we will see how the BamBoo does in the planter. If it dies I will have to think of something else. Also I still had to add 15-40 Lbs bags of soil, good thing Home Depot had it on sale for $1 each. (3-27-10)

After tearing down the dog house/play thing I have put the wood around the concrete block left over. I didn't tear down the concrete block because I am going to put a light pole and hat is a good base and also their is electricity already ran there and I'm not sure how deep in the ground it is so I don't to do something and have a big issue later.

I am going to put a light post near the back and right in the middle maybe put a box and fill it will gravel and put a container on the gravel and put a solar powered water fountain, just a small one nothing big. Then I can put plants all over the sides and let them flow over the other areas.

Just filed up with dirt and now I can start to think about what plants to put in it.

After getting 3.5 Tons of dirt (free from Craigslist) and filling up all the planters I have done so far, this is what is left. When I make the other planters I will use up all of this.

Two weeks ago I got a trailer full of mulch and filled up the two flower beds, extended the front flower bed and add the front flower bed around the trees.

Cleared the mulch out of the way and hand to hand out a couple of rough spots for the new light post.

Connected the electrial plug, that was designed to be on top of post but I moved it down closer to the bottom for easier access. Then I add the dusk to dawn sensor and added the light

Drilled holes in the concrete and added a post holed with anchors to the concrete. I still don't feel 100% with that post holder. It seems cheaply made. So When I finish the fire pit I will used some of the brick mortar to hold the light light up better and make it stronger.

Post light done. Now I just need to add plants.

Solar Light Pots

I got this idea from HGTV's website or some garden website, can't remember which one. They used a old broken solar light to put in a container pot to give some plants added height to make the container look bigger without being bigger. I used the same idea but I added it to the flower bed.

Take the inside lights and top off.

Add a little bit of gravel for drainage

Next I spaced the light fixtures out and pushed them in the ground.

Then add some soil to the light. Now it is becoming a small flower planter.

Now you can see the solar light fixtures and during the growing months you will see some purple Iris growing in the flower bed and then maybe some red or another color growing from the solar lights. Or add something like Crepping Jenny and have lime green/green growing down from the fixtures.

I wanted to make the area around the trailers look a little better. So I thought about how to do this. I finally decided to get gravel. That way I wouldn't have to weed-eat around the trailers and also help keep the tires from dry rotting. Sitting on grass over time can do that. I went and got 2 tons (4,000 lbs) of gravel on my first trip, but it wasn't enough. I had to end up getting 3 tons total, but I think it is taking shape nicely.

First trip with 2 tons of gravel I was about 3 ft short of my goal as you can see in the pick.

Now with the added gravel I was able to spread it all over where I needed and wanted it to go.

With extra lumber from a old deck I got a while back. I made a compost bin and now I have built 2 planters, will make at least another one soon. I am going to put grape plants in 1 and some other plants to grow and hide the trailers.

2 Wooden planters done. I put 2 wooden pieces on the bottom and cut them at a angle so that it is easier to slide them to move them out of the way to get to the trailers.

I got some new wood from my boss to make some new planters, and then I got a bunch of used wood from Craigslist that was a old deck. The wood was still in pretty good shape, the owner took it up and add a new one with a new design and layout. I made the compost bin ad turned the wood around so you see the better wood side on the outside. I think it came out pretty good. And I still have a lot of wood left so I will be building for a long time.

Since my house is on the corner my back yard is easily seen, so I have come up with something new to try and make the backyard look a little better. I have my 3 trailers so to help make make the area better and to have them not stand out as much. I am going to gravel in area where the trailers sit (help the tires from dry rotting) and have the gravel o over to the raised flower bed. Then have container arching around and in front of the trailers. You will still see the trailers but maybe with the gravel and plants in containers it will draw your eye more then the trailers and I can just pick up the containers and move them when I need to get to trailer.

I also wanted to make the front look a little better so I extended the front flower bed. It's not complete, I'm just making sure I have it the way I like it before adding mulch and plants. I put down some pine needles left over from the pine tree I cut down just to make it look a little better then dirt/mud.

1st flower bed I made for the side area, and if you look right before the patio their was some other concrete step type of look which I didn't like.

I started to take out the concrete stepping blocks, but found out they were actually cinder blocks. One had a cut, on had a old plastic bowl, and most were just small gravel and dirty/mud. My only guess was to keep grass and weed from coming on top the patio, but dirt, weed, or anything else comes on the left side between the house and garage part where the stone isn't so I think it was just a cheap thing.

I have taken of this week and I have been doing some things around the house, mainly outside yard wok related.

I pulled the little green trailer and put two pallets on the frame, just in case I need to slide the the branches off for some reason or slide them to a new spot.

I went back and tilled up some area around the concrete because I am going to ad some wood around it and make a raised flower bed so you don't see the concrete block left over from a previous project. I didn't jack hammer the concrete block because electricity is ran to it an I'm not sure how and I don't want to cut any lines.

New Dwarf Burning Bush in Front

I finally decided on one part of the front area of the house. I went ahead and made a little bit of a flower bed in the front right area of the house. I tilled the area, which I found had a lot of small rocks. I added 3 dwarf burning bushes, whichI went ahead and paid a little more for th bigger 3 gallon size at Lowes, they should look kind of cool during the winter when they turn red.

I still need to finish it completely with adding a little border to keep weeds out and keep the mulch in the area and not washed away since I put a weed barrel sheet down and put mulch on top of it. And I think I am going to put 1-2 hostas in front of the burning bushes to help make the bushes stand out more when they turn red.

One of my friends was going to throw away a old couch, and I decided to take it home with me and see about putting it on the patio. It isn't made for outside, but it's free so I'm not worried about if it gets wet.

I think it really makes the patio a little better.

To try to make the front look a little better I decided to build a little flower planter to be attached to the front lubber. I haven't attached the flower planter yet because I'm not sure about color scheme yet. I could paint it all brown to match the outside trim color, I could make it all yellowish to match the inside lubber area and it could make it look a little brighter in that area. I have also thought about painting the whole thing brown and then paint the corner front pieces yellowish to make that area stand out and still go the the house.

I put some gorilla wood glue on the back boards to keep them together and then clamp them together over night to cure

I just finished the flower planter on the lubber and here are the updated pics.

I add a plastic bag to be used like a liner and that way keep water from it as much as possible so it last longer. I also add some styrofoam packing peanuts to the bottom for a little bit of drainage. I had already drilled 5 small holes on the bottom so water can drain out.

I'm not 100% sure what to do yet in the front, I thought I ad a good idea and then another idea jumps out and I just want to make it look nice. Not to girly but still nice.

The original idea of just a small little flower bed on the front right side where the porch cuts off. I wasn't sure if just flowers (different heights or all same type (same color or different). Now I think I will put a couple of bushes in the back. Maybe let them grow just above the trash cans.
